Bringing ESG principles into deathcare

Developed following the establishment of the Sustainability and Development Committee in 2024, the dossier aims to encourage structured reflection on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles and their application in funeral-sector organisations.

The publication explores the foundations of the UN 2030 Agenda, provides an overview of evolving regulatory frameworks and presents a diagnostic of the funeral industry’s current sustainability baseline. Drawing on survey data from 33 countries, it identifies key challenges as well as opportunities for progress.

From knowledge to practical action

A central feature of the dossier is its collection of real-world good practices. Examples include decarbonisation initiatives, circular economy models and inclusive social programmes, demonstrating how sustainability can be addressed through concrete measures across different areas of funeral-sector operations.

Beyond raising awareness, the publication seeks to support professionals in integrating ESG principles into operational practices and strategic decision-making. It also encourages the exchange of knowledge, international cooperation and the development of approaches that promote greater accountability, transparency and social responsibility.

Building a more sustainable future together

The FIAT-IFTA Sustainability Technical Dossier is intended as a dynamic resource for funeral professionals navigating the evolving expectations of society and the sector. By bringing together international perspectives, industry insights and practical examples, it invites organisations to reflect on their own practices and identify opportunities for improvement.

This publication offers a starting point for informed discussion and meaningful action — helping the global funeral community honour life and memory while contributing to a more sustainable and dignified future.
