FIAT-IFTA is the only internationally governed Funeral Federation with National, Active and Associate Members in more than 80 Countries.
At the beginning of March, Barcelona became the epicentre of advanced thanatopraxis training, as the highly anticipated Level 1 Advanced Thanatopraxis Training officially began on 4 March 2025.
Running until 7 March, the four-day intensive programme brought together professionals from Finland, Greece and Spain, creating a rich international learning environment that promotes intercultural exchange and best practice.
Organized by Sortem and Tanatorio Sancho de Ávila - Funeraria Mémora Barcelona in collaboration with FIAT-IFTA, the training was designed to enhance participants' technical skills while encouraging knowledge-sharing among funeral professionals from around the world.
With a strong emphasis on practical learning, the entire training was conducted in English and led by experienced professionals. Participants gained hands-on experience working on real-life cases, mastering essential procedures. The fully equipped training facility allowed attendees to work with state-of-the-art preservation products, ensuring a comprehensive and up-to-date learning experience.
Participants also visited the Collserola funeral home, formerly one of the most important facilities in Barcelona and attend the ceremonial mass at the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar.
The program was culminated in a closing dinner and certificate ceremony, recognizing the participants' dedication and newly acquired skills. The certificates were presented by Jordi Fernández, responsible for embalming at Mémora and Lucrezia Pecorella - both instructors of the course, Jesús Gracia León, Director de operaciones de Mémora and Emerson De Luca, executive secretary of FIAT-IFTA. Antton Loinaz, as Sortem representative, was also present to thank all the participants for their confidence in these professional meeting.
