Associação Brasileira de Estudos Cemiteriais (ABEC)

The Brazilian Association of Cemetery Studies (ABEC) ]https://www.estudoscemiteriais.com.br/] is a non-profit organisation based at the Mathias Haas Funeral Memorial in Blumenau (SC). ABEC was founded on the occasion of the 1st Meeting on Brazilian Cemeteries, held at the University of São Paulo (USP), which was organised by Dr Maria Elizia Borges, geographer Eduardo Coelho Morgado Rezende and historian Harry Rodrigues Bellomo. Currently, the organisation brings together researchers whose research covers cemeteries and the most diverse manifestations of death and dying in Brazil and promotes biannual meetings, having held events in São Paulo/SP (2004), Porto Alegre/RS (2006), Goiânia/GO (2008), Piracicaba/SP (2010), Salvador/BA (2011), Belo Horizonte (2013), Rio de Janeiro (2015), Florianópolis (2017) and Porto Alegre (2019) and Natal (2023). The next event, the XI National Meeting, will be held in July 2024 in the city of São Paulo at the Anthropology Department of the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo-FFLCH/USP. ABEC has statutes and a code of ethics and is part of the Ibero-American Network for the Valuation and Management of Heritage Cemeteries, which brings together Latin American associations dedicated to the heritage preservation of cemeteries.

A ABEC foi fundada por ocasião do 1º Encontro sobre Cemitérios Brasileiros, ocorrido na Universidade de São Paulo (USP), o qual foi organizado pela Dra. Maria Elizia Borges, o geógrafo Me. Eduardo Coelho Morgado Rezende e o historiador Harry Rodrigues Bellomo. Atualmente, a entidade congrega pesquisadores cujas pesquisas abrangem os cemitérios e as mais diversas manifestações acerca da morte e do morrer no Brasil e promove encontros bianuais, tendo realizado eventos em São Paulo/SP (2004), Porto Alegre/RS (2006), Goiânia/GO (2008), Piracicaba/SP (2010), Salvador/BA (2011), Belo Horizonte (2013), Rio de Janeiro (2015), Florianópolis (2017) e Porto Alegre(2019) e Natal (2023). O próximo evento, o XI Encontro Nacional será em julho de 2024, na cidade de São Paulo no Departamento de Antropologia da Faculdade De Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas da Universidade de São Paulo–FFLCH/USP. A ABEC possui estatuto e código de ética e faz parte da Red Iberoamericana de Valoración y Gestión de Cementerios Patrimoniales, que congrega as associações latino-americanas que se dedicam ao tema da preservação patrimonial dos cemitérios.
